How You as a University Study Abroad Student Can Be On a Mission With God in Sevilla, Spain!

Make your time as a University Study Abroad student really count for God and His Kingdom!

Team Sevilla wants to enable you as a university student to transform your time studying in Sevilla to be on a mission with God. Ministry, mentoring, and maturing in Christ are focus points as we work together as a team to reach Spanish University students for Jesus Christ.

With a love for Spain, Spaniards, and especially university students, we have come together as Team Sevilla, desiring to see Christ’s Kingdom come among Spanish students.

Our ministry involves building relationships with Spanish university students through attending university classes, hanging out on campus, language exchanges with Spaniards (intercambios), English discussion groups on campus, film screenings, and more.

    This ministry includes:

    The English Connection

A weekly gathering of Spanish university students with U.S. university students in the various campuses around Sevilla with the aim of providing Spaniards the opportunity to practice their English conversation skills, while at the same time providing a casual, comfortable setting for culture and friendship exchange.

    Language Exhange (intercambios)

One-on-one meetings between U.S. university students and Spanish university students to exchange English for Spanish in a casual, conversational atmosphere.

    Bible Studies/Mentoring

One of the greatest challenges in your time of study abroad is maintaining a strong walk with the Lord and growing in Christian maturity. Team Sevilla focuses on this key component of your time in Sevilla in Bible studies for study abroad students and one-on-one mentoring /discipleship relationships between the U.S. student and Team Sevilla co-workers. The Spiritual Disciplines are central to this emphasis.

    Conectate

Study abroad students meet together monthly to explore missions and ministry in-depth with practical application to what God is doing in Sevilla, and enjoy a time of fellowship and English worship. We focus on how to reach Spanish university students for Christ, sharing your faith with Spaniards, understanding the Spanish world-view, leading seeker-discussion groups, and being on a mission with God here in Sevilla and when you return to the U.S.

    Seeker/Discussion Groups

As study abroad students build relationships with Spanish university students, the Lord opens doors for talking about spiritual matters. A natural outcome of those talks are seeker/discussion groups with students who have an interest in learning more about Christianity and talking about important life issues. These groups are led by study abroad students.

    Film Screenings

A selection of movies with spiritual undertones is shown over a number of weeks in a coffee shop setting and discussed from the Christian perspective with the aim of allowing the university students to see the message of Christ through these films and discuss how this message affects our everyday living.

    Sunday School

Another great way to get involved and grow is by serving! Our church in Bormujos (a small suburb of Sevilla) has a growing number of children that are the bright future of our church. As a study abroad student you can assist the Sunday School leaders by signing up to be on the Sunday school rotation.

What is a: Mission Exchange? Michelle answers this pressing question...

Ven con Dios ***explanation: vaya con Dios means go with God, so we are switching it up and asking Christians to come with God, bringing His message to Sevilla.

Your college campus is probably overflowing with a myriad of ministries and opportunities to get plugged into Christian outreach. Universities in Western Europe are a little different, and most campuses have little or no Christian fellowship. What can you do about this? Study abroad! This is a great opportunity to become a missionary without getting set behind in your studies, and as a college student you have unique mobility--the chance to pick up your life and move to another country for a year or semester. After graduation, other responsibilities will quickly squeeze this flexibility out. And if you come to Sevilla to study abroad, you can become a part of our team and help us out with the ministry here. One of the biggest challenges for new missionaries is finding a natural way to meet people, and by coming as a study abroad student, you have already overcome this obstacle. Your program will find you accommodations in which you will live with Spaniards, most likely non-believers--the perfect opportunity to let your whole life be a testimony of your faith. Spaniards will want to talk with you to practice their English, and you can use this chance to shower them with God's love. Spaniards won't be the only recipients in this exchange--you will be amazed by how God enriches your life as you witness Him working through you to change the lives of those around you. Your life will not be the same.

    • El intercambio: well known to anyone who has studied in Spain, literally translated means exchange. It is a conversation exchange in which a native Spanish speaker and a native speaker of another language, such as English, get together to practice conversation. What a win-win situation! The appeal of the intercambio is that it works at any level because everyone can always learn more from a native speaker and go further in our learning of a foreign language. Just like learning a foreign language, we can always grow further in our relationship with God. How wonderful if, in addition to learning English, your partner also learns about Jesus and enters into a relationship with Him! In exchange, you would get the joy of being an integral part of God's work of salvation in the life of another individual and the advancement of His Kingdom in Sevilla! Now that is really a win-win situation!
If you are still skeptical about the impact a Christian can have during a semester or year abroad, let me share my story with you. I came to Spain in the fall of 2001 as a study abroad student to learn about the culture and master the language. At that time I believed in the existence of God, but I didn't believe that He or She could be known to me. I was curious about other religions, but not about Christianity. My life plan was to move to Latin America and work with the poor. I thought Christians were closed minded and judgmental. When all the students in my program introduced themselves, one student stood out to everyone. Her name was Jen, and she loved Jesus. I'm sure she said more on that first day, but that was all that I remembered. I made a mental note to avoid her. But our group was small, and that didn't really work. As I got to know her, I saw that she was different than anyone I had ever known before. She was real, and being real was what I wanted more than anything else in the world. She never pushed her faith on me, but she wasn't shy about letting everyone know what she believed, either. One weekend, a small group of us went to Paris, and after visiting the Notre Dame, I was disturbed by how "holy" everything seemed and yet at the same time so distant from God. Well, Jen was the only person around to whom I could vent about my frustrations, so I told her that she was the last person I should talk to about spiritual stuff, since she was a Christian, and proceeded to tell her all the reasons I was not a Christian. We had a long conversation about God. I learned that the way she viewed God was not so different from my view of Him. And over the next few months we met together in little cafés until midnight and talked about everything from homework to boys, but mostly about God. Jen showed me through her life what it means to be a Christian, and I was startled to learn that it had so little to do with church attendance and everything to do with having a relationship with Jesus. She also introduced me to other Christians, and while I enjoyed their friendliness and part of me wanted to call myself a Christian, I knew I wasn't like them. Finally, one night in an Arabian teahouse, Jen and I were talking about God, as usual. She read me a passage from the Bible. I had heard this parable, the parable of the Sower, a million times before, but for some reason, as she read it aloud, I understood if for the first time. I could feel God's presence and I knew that He was speaking to me, and I knew it was Jesus and God all in one. That night I gave my life to Jesus.

Isaiah 6:8 reads, "Then I heard the Lord say, 'whom shall I send? Who will be our messenger?' And I said, 'Here I am. Send me!'"

I had no clue what God had in store for me when I first echoed Isaiah and said to Him, "I will go! Send me!" If you feel God calling you to get out of your comfort zone and experience Him in a new way, I encourage you to pray that as well, offer yourself to God's service, and consider a year in Sevilla.

If God is leading you to combine a year of language learning with a year of ministry in Sevilla, let us know! I can be your ministry coordinator, helping you meet people and stay focused during your time here. We will pray for you and encourage you as you bring the Good News to Spanish students.

Another Testimony fresh from Seville, 2006!!!

The first two weeks that I was there, I found myself discouraged.  I
hadn't really connected with any of my roommates or classmates or my
senora.  I was expecting God to do great and powerful things with my
time in Spain, and I wondered how that could be when I was already
struggling with loneliness and slight homesickness.  My first Sunday at
the church, God provided a taste of home, not America or my family, but
of my eternal home.  Being surrounded by believers again was a new
sense of my extended family and God's perfect providence of His love
through His church.  Getting connected there was by far the best thing
I did with my time in Sevilla.  I met new friends that kept me
encouraged and accountable to utilize the little time I had in Spain.
Though it was difficult being surrounded by a completely different
culture and new people, it was an exciting experience-- one that was
completed by a time where I can look back and see how clearly God
    worked there.
I also have this distinct memory of singing a worship song with the word
Alleluia in the chorus.  We just kept singing it over and over again,
and I imagined how big God was smiling down at us-- all of His children
from Spain, Germany, America, and Poland in this small Spanish
church, praising Him in the same language, even if it was only one
    word.
If I were to give advice to anyone studying abroad, it would be to
attend a local church.  You can experience a refreshing
worship experience and your view of God will expand tremendously... and
you can always count on a few hugs to bring you back home.

  • Financial Support

We are called and supported by the Internation Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. We are all VERY well taken care of! We would ask that all Southern Baptists continue to support the Cooperative Program as well as the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering to ensure that the over 5000 IMB missionaries have the financial backing they need to stay on the field and impact lostness for Jesus Christ.

If , however; you do not have the opportunity to support these two funds or would like to support our team over and above your Cooperative Program giving, here are a few of our current needs: These can also be found on the IMB's Web Page for Unfunded Needs: http://www.resources.imb.org/giving/

    1. Evangelistic Web Page - We are seeking to reach the postmodern generation of Sevilla. The first step in finding them is giving them a nonthreatening opportunity to find us. A high-quality, interactive Web Page would allow them the freedom to check us out before they have to commit to a personal contact. We are asking for $1000. (62201.240.045.05 Web Page)

    2. Evangelistic Meetings in Key Neighborhoods - In reaching out to a generation that has not experienced God, we want to allow them the opportunity to experience His power and love. We hope to give nonchristians the chance to experience God through nontraditional worship. Your gift of $2000 would help us to rent a meeting room, advertise and provide fellowship opportunities for the weeklong meetings. (62201.240.44.05 Evangelistic Meetings in Key Neighborhood)

    3. Jesus Films - We would like to purchase 500 Jesus Films for distribution in connection with our evangelistic outreaches in Schools and Key Neighborhoods. $1000. ( 62201.240.043.05 Jesus Films)

    4. Sound System for Worship Evangelism - Team Seville is committed to Worship Evangelism. We will offer true worship experiences that are open to the public, where they can experience God and His followers as they praise Him. A portable sound system will be needed for these meetings at a cost of: $7000.                    (62201.240.046.05 Sound System for Worship Evangelism)
